The Ten Rules For Balance and Inner Peace

Everyone has experienced that feeling that they are a little bit off balance. Are you having difficulty sleeping?  Do you feel stressed out?  Are you getting emotionally sensitive and finding too much drama in some or all of your relationships?   When our life is out of kilter, we either have too much focus in a specific area or lack of focus in many areas.  When balance is missing, we need to develop a routine to get us back on track and restore that sense of balance and inner peace.
Here are some tips that can help you restore that sense of balance:

1. Limit your online time (emails, forums, instant messaging, browsing) to no more than two hours per day.

2. Leave the house every morning, even if you don’t have to be somewhere. Go to a coffee shop and read the paper, visit a library or a museum, or go for a long walk or bike ride.

3. Keep regular sleeping hours. If you are having difficulty sleeping, stick to a schedule when you are going to sleep and when you are going to wake.  To help you fall asleep more easily, it might be helpful to have a cup of tea, read, listen to soft music or fall asleep to a subliminal CD.

4. Save the last hour of the day for personal quiet time.  Treat yourself to reading a book or magazine, meditating or watching a favorite television program.  This is your time – no phone, no computer, no work.

5. Look at the people around you.  You may have some individuals that are pulling you off balance with their own drama or negativity. Distance yourself from these people until you find your sense of balance.  Don’t isolate yourself from them, just keep a bit of distance between them and you for a period of time.

6. Fill your thoughts and time with positive ideas and activities.  If you start your day with a positive thought, your whole day will be better.  And remember – smile!

7. Have an assortment of positive minded friends in different areas of your life. As the old saying goes, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket,” or all your social time into one friend or one group of friends. This way when there are problems, and there almost always are occasional bumps in the road even in good relationships, you will have other friends to see you through.  Besides, variety is the spice of life!

8. We are bombarded with lots of negativity and violence over the airwaves.  If you have been watching a lot of television, you may need to give yourself a time out.  Try a TV free week.  You will be amazed at how much extra time you will have to do other things.  Once you have gone without TV for one week, try and limit your television time to no more than 2 hours a day.  Fill your time with things that really matter.

9. Balance the time in your day between different activities and efforts, whether at work, school or home. Too much of one type of activity can make you feel even more stressed or dissatisfied. Use a “To Do” list to pace yourself and to keep on top of deadlines.

10. LIGHTEN UP!  Things will get better!
